Analysts note the return of sea transportation to the pre-pandemic period
According to Clarkson Research experts, by the end of 2021, sea transportation has actually returned to the indicators of the “pre-pandemic” period. Thus, global sea transportation increased by 400 million tons compared to the previous year, or by 3.4% – up to 12 billion tons.
At the same time, in some categories of cargo, transportation exceeded the level of 2019: grain – by 9.3%, liquefied natural gas – by 6.9%, liquefied petroleum gas – by 6%, containers (TEU) – by 4.7%, iron ore – 4.3%. At the same time, coal transportation decreased by 3.5%, petroleum products – by 6.8%, crude oil – by 8.9%, passenger cars – by 12%. Transportation of chemical goods remained at the level of 2019.
Interestingly, according to forecasts, global shipping will grow by another 3.4% compared to 2021 – up to 12.5 million tons.
